Toimintonäppäin, often referred to as a function key, is a special key found on computer keyboards. Their primary purpose is to provide users with shortcuts for performing specific commands or functions within various software applications and operating systems.

The behavior of function keys is context-dependent, meaning their assigned task changes depending on the program or system currently in use. For example, F1 is commonly used to open a help menu in many applications, while F5 is often used to refresh a web page or reload a document. Other function keys might be assigned to tasks like saving a file, opening a new window, or executing a search.

In some operating systems and applications, function keys can be used in combination with modifier keys such as Shift, Ctrl, or Alt to access even more functionalities. For instance, pressing Shift+F5 might perform a different action than pressing F5 alone. This allows for a vast array of customizable shortcuts, enhancing user efficiency and streamlining workflows.
