Titanium ceramic, or titanium-based ceramic, refers to a group of ceramic materials in which titanium-containing compounds provide the primary phase or reinforcement. The category includes titanium carbides (TiC), titanium nitrides (TiN), titanium boride (TiB2), and titanium-containing MAX phases such as Ti3SiC2 and Ti2AlC. Some definitions also include titanium-containing ceramic matrix composites in which a ceramic matrix is reinforced with titanium or titanium compounds.

Key properties of these materials include very high hardness and high melting temperatures, strong wear resistance, and good chemical stability. TiC and TiN offer exceptional hardness and stiffness, while MAX phases like Ti3SiC2 combine ceramic hardness with some metallic conductivity and damage tolerance. Common limitations include brittleness, oxidation at elevated temperatures, and machining challenges for bulk ceramics. Coatings based on TiN or TiC can be deposited on tool steels and other substrates to improve wear resistance.

Manufacturing methods differ for bulk ceramics and coatings. Bulk Ti-based ceramics are produced by powder processing and sintering, including hot pressing or spark plasma sintering. Thin-film coatings are commonly applied by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or physical vapor deposition (PVD). MAX phases are synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reactions with controlled stoichiometry.

Applications for titanium-based ceramics span high-hardness coatings for cutting tools, wear-resistant surfaces, and protective coatings for dies and machinery. They are also explored for aerospace components and certain biomedical or dental coating contexts where corrosion resistance and biocompatibility are advantageous. The development of these materials continues to focus on improving toughness and oxidation resistance through composite and nanostructured designs.
