Timestratigraphic refers to the principles and methods used to establish the relative ages of rock layers and the geologic time they represent. It is a fundamental concept in stratigraphy, the study of layered rocks. Timestratigraphic units are defined by the fossils they contain or by their position relative to other rock layers. The goal is to create a chronological framework for Earth's history.

The hierarchy of timestratigraphic units mirrors that of chronostratigraphic units, but timestratigraphic units represent the actual rock bodies. The basic unit is a stage, which is a body of rock representing a specific interval of geologic time. Stages are grouped into larger units called systems, which in turn are grouped into eras and eons. For example, the Jurassic System is a timestratigraphic unit representing the rocks deposited during the Jurassic Period.

Correlation is a key process in timestratigraphy, involving the matching of rock layers from different locations to determine their relative ages. This is often achieved through the study of index fossils, which are fossils of organisms that lived for a relatively short period and were widely distributed. Lithologic correlation, based on matching rock types, can also be used, but is less reliable for establishing precise time equivalency.

The established timestratigraphic scale, often referred to as the geologic time scale, provides a standardized way to refer to Earth's history. It is continuously refined as new data and techniques become available. Understanding timestratigraphy is crucial for interpreting Earth's past, including the evolution of life, changes in climate, and geological events.
