Textile decorating is the practice of applying color, pattern, or texture to fabric to enhance its appearance or function. It encompasses a range of methods, including dyeing, printing, weaving, embroidery, appliqué, and surface embellishment, and is used in fashion, interiors, and industrial textiles.

Dyeing covers color application to fiber or fabric and includes direct and reactive dyes, mordant-based processes, and resist techniques such as batik, shibori, tie-dye, and ikat. Printing designs onto fabric can be done by hand block printing, screen printing, roller printing, or digital textile printing, enabling both repeat patterns and photographic imagery.

Embroidery adds texture and motifs through stitches, performed by hand or machine. Embellishment involves adding decorative elements such as beads, sequins, rhinestones, or metallic threads, and may include heat-pressed films or foils. Appliqué places smaller cut fabric pieces onto a base fabric, often combined with quilting or patchwork. Other decorative approaches include pleating, smocking, quilting, felting, and, with newer technology, laser cutting or engraving to create surface patterns.

Materials used vary with technique and include natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool, and silk, along with synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon. The choice of fiber influences dye uptake, colorfastness, and care requirements.

Historically, textile decorating has deep cultural roots in many regions, with traditional practices such as Asian block printing, Indonesian batik, and Central Asian ikat, later augmented by industrial printing and contemporary digital technologies. Environmental and safety considerations—colorfastness, dye toxicity, and water use—have driven ongoing development toward more sustainable processes.
