Tesztfüggvények, in English often referred to as test functions or objective functions, are mathematical functions used primarily in optimization problems to evaluate the quality of a proposed solution. Their core purpose is to assign a numerical value to a set of parameters or variables, representing how "good" that particular configuration is with respect to a defined objective. In optimization, the goal is typically to find the parameters that either minimize or maximize this test function.

These functions are critical in various fields, including machine learning, engineering, and operations research. In machine learning, for instance, a cost function or loss function acts as a test function. It quantifies the error between the model's predictions and the actual target values. Optimizing the model's parameters then involves finding the set that minimizes this loss function. Similarly, in engineering design, a test function might represent the performance of a structure or system under certain conditions, and optimization aims to find designs that yield the best performance.

The properties of a test function significantly impact the difficulty of an optimization problem. Smooth, convex functions are generally easier to optimize, as they have a single global minimum (or maximum). In contrast, non-convex functions can have multiple local optima, making it challenging to guarantee that the found solution is the absolute best. Researchers often design benchmark test functions, such as the Rastrigin or Ackley functions, to evaluate and compare the performance of different optimization algorithms in a standardized way. These benchmarks cover a range of complexities, including high dimensionality, multimodality, and deceptive landscapes.
