It is formed from testi (test) and setti (set) with the instrumental suffix -llä, and it appears in Finnish-language technical writing to denote using a held-out dataset for assessment.

In practice, testisetillä means evaluating a trained model on data that was not used during training, with the aim of estimating how the model will perform on new, unseen data. The results from the test set provide an external check on generalization, complementing training and validation phases.

Common methods involve creating a hold-out test set, often through random sampling or stratified sampling to preserve class distributions. In some workflows, cross-validation frames are used, where a designated test fold is held out in each iteration.
