testiaika

Testiaika, commonly referred to as a probationary period, is an initial phase in an employment relationship during which the suitability of the employee for the job is assessed. During this period, both the employer and the employee can evaluate fit and performance, and the arrangement is typically defined in the employment contract as a koeaika.

The legal framework for testiaika in Finland allows the period to be agreed upon in the contract, with a general maximum duration of four months. In some sectors or under certain collective agreements, the duration may be adjusted, but four months is the standard ceiling in ordinary cases. If the employee passes the testiaika, the contract continues under the normal terms; if not, the employment ends, often at the end of the trial period or earlier as specified in the contract.

Rights and duties during testiaika generally remain subject to the same statutory framework as outside the period, including pay and access to benefits, though the termination rules during the trial phase are more flexible and can allow for shorter notice or simpler termination procedures as agreed in the contract. Termination during testiaika does not usually require a formal justification, beyond what the contract or applicable collective agreements specify.

Testiaika serves as a risk-management tool for both parties, enabling an early assessment before committing to a long-term employment relationship. It is distinct from formal training periods or internships, though it may share similarities in purpose and structure.
