Terraforming, sometimes written as teraforming, is the hypothetical process of deliberately modifying the environment of a planetary body to render it habitable for Earth-like life. The goal is to create a stable climate, breathable atmosphere, and accessible resources sufficient to sustain humans and other terrestrial organisms without ongoing ecological support from Earth.

Proposed methods include thickening the planet's atmosphere with greenhouse gases, warming the surface to allow liquid water, stabilizing climate against fluctuations, and introducing ecologies capable of self-regulation. In theory, this can involve releasing volatiles from the planet or its subsurface, creating oceans, constructing orbital mirrors or shading devices, and deploying large-scale biotechnologies to establish biospheres. The process is envisioned as taking centuries to millennia and requiring enormous energy, materials, and engineering capability beyond current capabilities.

Current assessments conclude that no world has been terraformed. Mars is often discussed as the most plausible candidate due to its proximity, but achieving habitability would demand sustained, large-scale interventions and raises unresolved questions about long-term climate stability, radiation protection, and resource extraction. Venus presents a more extreme challenge, with a dense CO2 atmosphere and scorching surface conditions; proposals typically focus on atmospheric modification or cooling rather than full terraforming in the near term.

Ethical and policy considerations include planetary protection, contamination of pristine environments, and governance of space resources. Critics emphasize ecological risks, intergenerational equity, and the possibility that terraforming could undermine preservation of other biosignatures or hinder future exploration. Debate continues within scientific, philosophical, and policy communities.
