There are four main types of tennis court surfaces recognized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF): clay, grass, hard, and carpet.

Clay courts are typically made of crushed shale, stone, or brick. They are known for their slower ball speed and high bounce, which allows for longer rallies and strategic play. Players often slide on clay, which can be easier on the joints than harder surfaces. However, clay courts require more maintenance and are susceptible to weather conditions.

Grass courts, often found at prestigious tournaments like Wimbledon, are the fastest surface. The ball bounces low and quickly, favoring aggressive players with strong serves and volleys. Grass courts are expensive to maintain and are highly dependent on weather.

Hard courts are constructed from rigid materials like asphalt or concrete, often coated with acrylic layers to provide cushioning and color. They offer a medium-fast pace and a consistent bounce, making them a popular choice for many professional tournaments and recreational play.

Carpet courts, made of textile or polymer material, are less common today, especially in professional play. They provide a very fast surface with a low bounce. Historically, they were used indoors but have largely been replaced by hard courts.

The choice of court surface impacts player technique and strategy, and different tournaments are played on varying surfaces, requiring players to adapt their game accordingly.
