Tendinitis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of a tendon. Tendons are tough, fibrous cords of tissue that connect muscles to bones. This inflammation typically results from overuse, repetitive motion, or injury. Common symptoms include pain, tenderness, and a dull ache around the affected joint, which may worsen with movement and at night. Swelling and a grating sensation (crepitus) during movement can also occur.

The condition can affect any tendon in the body, but it is most common in areas that are frequently used, such as the shoulder (rotator cuff tendinitis), elbow (tennis elbow or golfer's elbow), wrist, hip, knee (jumper's knee), and Achilles tendon. Certain activities that involve repetitive stress, like sports or certain occupations, increase the risk of developing tendinitis. Factors such as age, poor posture, and inadequate warm-up or stretching can also contribute.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination to assess the range of motion and identify painful areas. Imaging tests like ultrasound or MRI may be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions. Treatment for tendinitis primarily focuses on reducing inflammation and pain, and allowing the tendon to heal. This often includes rest from aggravating activities, ice application, and over-the-counter pain relievers like NSAIDs. Physical therapy, including stretching and strengthening exercises, is crucial for restoring function and preventing recurrence. In persistent or severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be considered.
