Temperate coastal is a term used in geographic and ecological contexts to describe coastal regions located within the temperate zones, where the ocean exerts a strong moderating influence on climate. These areas typically experience relatively mild winters and cool summers, with moderate to high humidity and precipitation distributed through the year. The marine influence also often produces fog, coastal breezes, and relatively stable year-round conditions compared with inland areas at similar latitudes.

Climate and geography in temperate coastal zones are shaped by prevailing westerlies and nearby ocean currents, which together limit temperature extremes and support productive coastal ecosystems. Distinct regional expressions occur along western margins of continents, including western Europe (for example Britain, Ireland, and parts of France and Iberia), the Pacific Northwest of North America, southern Chile and Argentina, and various coastal regions of New Zealand and southeastern Australia.

Ecologically, temperate coasts harbor diverse terrestrial and marine communities. Terrestrial systems range from temperate rainforests to coastal woodlands and scrub. In the sea, kelp forests, seagrass beds, estuaries, and salt marshes provide habitat for a wide array of invertebrates, fishes, birds, and marine mammals. The interfaces between land and sea also support high nutrient exchange and productivity, contributing to rich fisheries and foraging grounds.

Human activity in temperate coastal areas is dense and varied, including shipping, fishing, tourism, and urban development. These zones face pressures from habitat loss, pollution, and climate change, including sea-level rise and ocean warming. Management approaches often emphasize ecosystem conservation, sustainable fisheries, and coastal resilience.
