It includes data produced by onboard devices, sensors, and mobile apps, such as GPS location, speed, acceleration, braking, fuel consumption, engine diagnostics, tire pressure, battery status, maintenance alerts, trip start/stop times, odometer, and driver behavior metrics.

Data collection and flow: data can be collected by embedded devices in vehicles, transmitted over cellular networks or satellite links to cloud or enterprise servers, processed in near real time or stored for batch analysis. Data can be stored locally on the device and synchronized later. Data formats and protocols vary across vendors; interoperability depends on standards and APIs.

Applications: fleet management, route optimization, maintenance planning, utilization analysis, safety monitoring, and insurance via usage-based insurance (telemetry-based premiums). In public transport and logistics, telematics enable asset tracking, geo-fencing, and predictive maintenance.

Privacy and regulation: telematics data may include personal data, particularly when drivers are involved; consent and data minimization are required under GDPR in the EU, with rules on data ownership, access rights, data retention, and disclosures to third parties. Security concerns include authentication, encryption, and protection against tampering.

Limitations and challenges: data quality, sensor outages, misinterpretation of driver behavior, privacy concerns, and the need for interoperability across devices and platforms. The term is used across automotive, transport, and industrial sectors to improve efficiency, safety, and asset utilization.
