Teaproducing is the agricultural and industrial process of producing tea from Camellia sinensis, including cultivation, harvesting, processing, and packaging for consumption. It encompasses farm management, leaf selection, manufacturing, quality control, and distribution. The term covers both traditional smallholder production and large-scale commercial operations.

Cultivation and harvest: Tea plants thrive in warm, humid climates with well-drained acidic soils. Altitude, rainfall, and shade influence flavor and yield. Plucking usually targets the tender apical bud and the first two leaves; the frequency of harvests, known as flushes, varies by region. Gardens assign clones and pruning cycles to balance growth and quality.

Processing: After harvest, leaves undergo withering to reduce moisture, followed by rolling or shaping to rupture cell walls and begin oxidation. The degree of oxidation and subsequent firing or drying determine the final category. Green tea is minimally oxidized and often heat-fixed to halt oxidation; black tea is fully oxidized; oolong tea undergoes partial oxidation; white tea is lightly processed; pu-erh is specially processed for aging, with Sheng (raw) or Shu (ripe) styles.

Types and terroir: Tea flavor reflects cultivar, climate, soil, elevation, and processing choices. Regions develop characteristic styles, such as Chinese green or Japanese sencha, Indian Assam and Darjeeling black teas, Sri Lankan Ceylon teas, and Kenyan blends.

Industry and distribution: The teaproducing sector is a global industry, led by producers in China, India, Sri Lanka, and Kenya, with significant contributions from Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and other countries. Sustainability and certification programs address labor, environmental impact, and supply-chain transparency.
