Taustaerottelu, a Finnish term, translates to "background separation" or "background subtraction" in English and refers to a technique used in computer vision and image processing. The core idea is to isolate moving objects or regions of interest from a static background in a video sequence. This is achieved by comparing each frame of the video to a reference model of the background.

The process typically involves creating a background model, which can be a single static image or a more dynamic model that accounts for gradual changes like lighting variations. Once the background model is established, each incoming frame is analyzed. Pixels in the current frame that differ significantly from the corresponding pixels in the background model are then flagged as foreground. These differences are often determined by calculating the distance between pixel values in the current frame and the background model, using a threshold to distinguish foreground from background.

Various algorithms exist for background subtraction, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Simple techniques like frame differencing compare consecutive frames, while more robust methods like Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) can handle more complex scenarios, including illumination changes and slow-moving objects.
