Tarnimise is a term used to describe a process of becoming dull, stained, or discolored, and it is commonly applied to two related but distinct domains: metal surfaces and reputations. In materials science, tarnimise refers to the chemical alteration of a metal surface that results in a visible change in appearance, often a dull or colored layer. In social and organizational contexts, tarnimise denotes the erosion of reputation or perceived integrity due to negative information, actions, or perceptions.

Metal tarnishing occurs when a metal reacts with elements in its environment. For example, silver can form silver sulfide when exposed to sulfur-containing compounds, copper develops copper oxide or patina, and brass can similarly discolor. Environmental factors such as humidity, air pollutants, temperature, and the presence of acids or chorine-containing chemicals accelerate the process. Tarnished surfaces may be cleaned through polishing or chemical cleaners that remove the unwanted layer, but repeated tarnishing is common unless preventive measures are taken. Prevention includes applying protective coatings, using anti-tarnish alloys, storing items in low-humidity or inert environments, and minimizing exposure to reactive atmospheres.

Reputational tarnishing occurs when a person or organization is perceived as having engaged in unethical, wrong, or controversial behavior, or when negative information spreads. The process can be rapid and self-reinforcing, especially in the age of social media, and may outlast the original event. Management strategies focus on transparency, timely and factual communication, accountability, remediation where appropriate, and ongoing trust-building. However, reputational tarnish can be difficult to reverse fully and often requires sustained effort. In both senses, tarnimise highlights how external factors and perceptions can alter the surface—whether physical or metaphorical—of an object, a person, or an institution.
