Taqiya, from the Arabic taqiyah meaning prudence or shielding, is a concept in Islam describing precautionary concealment of one’s religious beliefs in situations of danger or persecution. It is most closely associated with Shia Islam, though some Sunni scholars acknowledge its permissibility in narrowly defined circumstances.

Historically, taqiya arose as a strategy for minority communities facing political or sectarian oppression. In times of threat, individuals might publicly diminish or hide aspects of their faith to protect themselves, their families, or their communities. It is not a general license to lie; most Islamic legal traditions insist that taqiya applies primarily to safeguarding life and safety and should not be used to deceive in ordinary, non-coercive contexts.

Jurisprudence on taqiya varies. In Shia thought, it is discussed as a legitimate option within specific limits, often tied to contexts of imminent danger or persecution. It does not authorize the betrayal of trusted confidences or the misrepresentation of core doctrines in normal religious practice. Sunni perspectives range by school, with some acknowledging duress-based exceptions and others stressing caution or broader prohibitions against deception.

In modern discourse, taqiya is sometimes misunderstood or exploited in polemics about Muslim honesty or loyalty. Reputable scholarship emphasizes its historical and doctrinal nuance: a narrowly defined allowance for survival under threat, not a general principle permitting deceit in everyday life or politics.
