Tannutredninger, often referred to as "tannfelling" in everyday language, is a natural biological process that occurs in most mammals, including humans, where deciduous teeth, or "baby teeth," are shed and replaced by permanent teeth. This process begins in early childhood and continues through adolescence. The gradual loss of baby teeth allows for the eruption of larger, stronger adult teeth that are designed to last a lifetime.

The sequence and timing of tooth shedding vary between individuals and are influenced by genetics and overall health. Typically, the lower front teeth are the first to be lost, followed by the upper front teeth. Molars and other teeth are shed later. Each deciduous tooth has a developing permanent tooth underneath it. As the permanent tooth grows, it resorbs the roots of the deciduous tooth, causing it to loosen and eventually fall out.

While generally a smooth and uneventful process, some children may experience minor discomfort, slight swelling of the gums, or mild bleeding where the tooth was lost. Rarely, a baby tooth may not fall out on its own, requiring dental intervention. In such cases, a dentist might recommend extracting the deciduous tooth to allow the permanent tooth to erupt properly. Maintaining good oral hygiene throughout the tooth-shedding period is crucial to prevent cavities and infections in the vulnerable areas.
