Taloussyklit, or economic cycles, refer to the recurrent fluctuations in economic activity that an economy experiences over time. These cycles are characterized by periods of expansion, when the economy grows and prospers, followed by periods of contraction, or recession, when economic activity declines. While the precise timing and intensity of these cycles can vary, they are a fundamental feature of market economies.

The typical economic cycle is often described as having four phases: expansion, peak, contraction (recession), and trough. During an expansion, economic indicators such as GDP, employment, and consumer spending are generally on the rise. A peak marks the highest point of economic activity before a downturn begins. The contraction phase, or recession, is characterized by a significant decline in economic output, often accompanied by rising unemployment and falling demand. Finally, a trough represents the lowest point of the recession, after which the economy begins to recover and enter a new expansionary phase.

Several factors can influence the occurrence and severity of economic cycles. These include changes in aggregate demand, technological innovations, government policies (monetary and fiscal), and external shocks such as financial crises or geopolitical events. Economists study these cycles to understand their causes, predict their future course, and develop policies to mitigate their negative effects, such as smoothing out booms and busts to promote more stable economic growth.
