Talmeinafræði is the Icelandic term for speech-language pathology. It is a health profession dedicated to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders. Professionals in this field, known as talmeinafræðingar (speech-language pathologists), work with individuals of all ages, from infants to the elderly, who experience difficulties in understanding or expressing spoken language, producing speech sounds, managing voice quality, or swallowing safely.

These disorders can arise from a variety of causes, including developmental delays, stroke, traumatic brain injury, neurological conditions like Parkinson's disease or ALS, hearing impairment, cleft palate, and functional impairments. Talmeinafræðingar employ a range of therapeutic techniques tailored to each individual's specific needs. This may involve articulation therapy to improve speech clarity, language intervention to enhance comprehension and expression, voice therapy to address vocal quality or issues, and swallowing rehabilitation to prevent aspiration and ensure adequate nutrition.

Children may be seen for difficulties with language development, stuttering, or speech sound production. Adults might require assistance following a stroke to regain communication abilities, manage cognitive-communication deficits, or address voice problems. Swallowing disorders, known as dysphagia, are also a significant area of focus, with talmeinafræðingar assessing and treating individuals at risk of choking or malnutrition due to impaired swallowing mechanisms. They often collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, audiologists, occupational therapists, and educators, to provide comprehensive care.
