Tahkepõletus, often translated as "ash burning" or "ash fertilization," is an agricultural practice historically used in some parts of Estonia, particularly in forest-rich regions. It is a method of soil improvement and nutrient replenishment, especially for sandy or infertile soils. The core of the practice involves gathering large quantities of wood ash, typically from burned timber in forest clearings or from domestic hearths, and spreading it onto fields.

The primary benefit of tahkepõletus lies in the nutrient content of wood ash. Ash is rich in potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium, all essential elements for plant growth. It also contains lime, which helps to neutralize acidic soils, making them more hospitable to a wider range of crops. This liming effect can improve soil structure and increase the availability of other nutrients.

The practice was often associated with slash-and-burn agriculture, where forest areas were cleared by burning to create arable land. The ash left behind from this burning was then incorporated into the soil. In areas where forests were abundant, tahkepõletus was a sustainable way to maintain soil fertility without relying on external inputs. However, it could also lead to soil degradation if practiced excessively or if the ash was not balanced with other organic matter.
