Tabulated data commonly includes counts, frequencies, percentages, or summary statistics, and it often serves as the first step in data analysis.

In statistics and research, tabulation refers to the creation of tables such as frequency tables and cross-tabulations (contingency tables). Univariate tabulations summarize a single variable (for example, the distribution of ages in a sample), while cross-tabulations compare two or more categorical variables to explore associations or interactions. Tabulations support descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, and data presentation.

In computing and data processing, tabulation historically referred to the automated or manual production of tables from large datasets. Early tabulating machines and punched cards in the late 19th and early 20th centuries enabled large-scale census work. Today, software tools generate tabulations as part of data analysis pipelines, dashboards, and reports, often exporting to formats such as CSV or spreadsheet tables.

Tabulation also appears in typography and word processing, where it denotes the alignment of text at fixed tab stops to create columns. This form of tabulation facilitates the orderly layout of text, lists, and forms.
