Süütussüsteem refers to the ignition system in an internal combustion engine. Its primary function is to initiate combustion of the fuel-air mixture within the cylinders at the precise moment required for optimal engine performance.

The basic components of a typical süütussüsteem include a power source, an ignition coil, a distributor (in older systems), spark plugs, and associated wiring. The power source, usually the vehicle's battery, provides the initial electrical energy. This energy is then stepped up by the ignition coil, transforming the low voltage from the battery into the high voltage needed to create a spark.

In traditional systems, a distributor plays a crucial role in timing. It receives the high voltage from the coil and directs it to the correct spark plug at the appropriate time, usually controlled by mechanical breaker points or electronic sensors. Modern vehicles often utilize electronic ignition systems without a mechanical distributor. These systems use sensors to detect engine speed and position, and a control module then precisely times the spark delivery directly to each cylinder via individual ignition coils or a coil-on-plug setup.

The spark plug is the final component, designed to generate an electrical spark across its electrodes. This spark ignites the compressed fuel-air mixture, causing a rapid expansion of gases that drives the piston down, thus generating power. The timing and intensity of this spark are critical for efficient combustion, fuel economy, and emissions control.
