süütekasti

Süütekasti is an Estonian term that translates to "ignition box" or "spark plug box." It refers to a component within an internal combustion engine responsible for storing and distributing electrical energy to the spark plugs. This energy, when properly timed and delivered, ignites the fuel-air mixture within the cylinders, initiating the combustion process.

Historically, süütekasti were mechanical devices. In older vehicles, they were often part of the distributor assembly, containing breaker points and a condenser. These mechanical components would open and close to interrupt the flow of current to the ignition coil, inducing a high voltage pulse. This pulse was then directed to the correct spark plug via a rotor and distributor cap.

Modern vehicles primarily use electronic süütekasti, often referred to as ignition control modules or engine control units (ECUs). These systems are far more sophisticated, utilizing sensors to monitor engine conditions such as RPM, throttle position, and engine temperature. The ECU then precisely controls the timing and duration of the spark, optimizing engine performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions. The electronic süütekasti eliminates the need for mechanical wear parts like breaker points, leading to greater reliability and reduced maintenance.
