Süsinikmaks, also known as carbon liver, is a rare congenital or acquired condition characterized by the presence of abnormal fatty deposits within the liver tissue. It is a variant of steatosis, distinguished by significant accumulation of lipids in the liver cells, which can impair hepatic function over time.

The condition may be congenital, resulting from genetic mutations affecting lipid metabolism, or acquired due to metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, or alcohol abuse. Other contributing factors include certain medications, malnutrition, and lipid storage diseases. In süsinikmaks, the fatty infiltration is typically diffuse, involving multiple liver regions, and can be detected through imaging techniques such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Clinically, patients with süsinikmaks often remain asymptomatic in early stages. However, as lipid accumulation progresses, symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal discomfort, or hepatomegaly may develop. If left untreated, the disease can advance to steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and ultimately cirrhosis, increasing the risk for liver failure.

Diagnosis involves blood tests showing elevated liver enzymes, along with imaging findings. Histopathological examination of liver tissue confirms the presence of lipid-laden hepatocytes. Management primarily focuses on addressing underlying metabolic disturbances through lifestyle modifications, including calorie restriction, weight loss, and controlled alcohol intake. Pharmacological treatments may be considered in specific cases to improve liver function and prevent progression to more advanced liver disease.

While süsinikmaks is not universally recognized as a distinct medical entity, it highlights the importance of metabolic health for liver function and the need for early intervention in cases of fatty liver disease.
