Sügavtrükivõte, also known as intaglio printing, is an image transferring process where the image is created by incising a design into a smooth metal plate. The incised lines or areas are then filled with ink. When printing, paper is pressed against the plate, and the ink held in the recessed areas is transferred to the paper. This is in contrast to relief printing, where the ink is applied to the raised surfaces of a plate.

The process begins with the creation of a master plate, typically made of copper or zinc. The artist or engraver then carves, etches, or otherwise creates depressions in the plate's surface to form the image. Common techniques include drypoint, etching, engraving, and aquatint. Once the plate is prepared and inked, excess ink is wiped from the surface, leaving ink only within the incised lines. A sheet of dampened paper is then placed on the plate, and pressure is applied, usually with a printing press. The pressure forces the paper into the recessed areas, picking up the ink and creating the printed image. Sügavtrükivõte is known for its ability to produce rich, tonal qualities and fine detail, making it a favored method for fine art prints and high-quality reproductions. The depth of the incised lines can vary, allowing for a wide range of tonal values from fine lines to broad, dark areas.
