Sähkösinkitys, also known as electrogalvanizing or electroplating with zinc, is a surface finishing process used to protect metal parts from corrosion. It involves immersing a conductive workpiece, typically steel or iron, into an electrolytic solution containing zinc ions. An electric current is then passed through the solution, causing the zinc ions to deposit onto the surface of the workpiece, forming a thin, uniform layer of zinc.

This electrochemical deposition process creates a sacrificial coating. Zinc is more electrochemically active than iron, meaning it will corrode preferentially, sacrificing itself to protect the underlying base metal. This is the primary mechanism by which sähkösinkitys provides corrosion resistance. The thickness of the zinc layer can be controlled by adjusting the current density and the duration of the plating process, allowing for tailored levels of protection.

Sähkösinkitys is widely used across various industries due to its cost-effectiveness and good corrosion protection. It is commonly applied to fasteners like screws and bolts, automotive components, electrical connectors, and household hardware. The resulting zinc coating can have a bright, matte, or iridescent appearance depending on the specific additives used in the plating bath and any subsequent passivation treatments. Passivation, often a chromate or non-chromate conversion coating, further enhances corrosion resistance and can provide different colors.
