Sähkölukot, also known as electric locks or maglocks, are locking mechanisms that use electricity to secure doors and other access points. Unlike traditional mechanical locks that rely on physical key and tumbler systems, sähkölukot operate on the principle of electromagnetism or by controlling an electric motor to engage a bolt.

There are several types of sähkölukot. Electromagnetic locks, or maglocks, consist of an armature plate and an electromagnet. When energized, the electromagnet creates a strong magnetic field that attracts and holds the armature plate, keeping the door secured. When power is removed, the magnetic force is released, allowing the door to open. These are commonly used in high-traffic areas and emergency exits due to their fail-safe operation.

Another type is electric strike locks. These replace the traditional strike plate on a door frame. An electric strike contains a movable part that is held in place by a spring-loaded mechanism. When an electrical signal is received, the mechanism is released, allowing the door to be opened. These are often used in conjunction with other locking systems and can be fail-secure or fail-safe.

Motorized deadbolts or latches are also considered sähkölukot. These locks use an electric motor to extend or retract a bolt or deadbolt, physically securing the door. They offer a more robust physical locking mechanism than maglocks.

Sähkölukot are frequently integrated into access control systems, allowing for remote unlocking via keycards, fobs, keypads, or smartphone applications. They are widely employed in commercial buildings, offices, data centers, and residential security systems where controlled access and remote management are desired. Their installation and wiring require attention to power sources and potentially connection to building management systems.
