Színtérrényt is a Hungarian term that translates literally to "color space corruption" or "color space decay." It refers to a phenomenon observed in certain digital imaging or video processing contexts where the intended color information of an image or video is degraded or altered in an undesirable way, often leading to noticeable inaccuracies, banding, or loss of detail in the color transitions. This corruption can manifest in various forms, including inaccurate color reproduction, the appearance of posterization (or color banding), or shifts in hue and saturation.

The causes of színtérrényt can be diverse. It might arise from limitations in color depth during compression or conversion processes, where the available number of colors is insufficient to accurately represent the original gradations. For instance, converting a high-bit-depth image to a lower bit-depth format without proper dithering can result in banding. Another common cause is aggressive or poorly implemented image processing algorithms, such as those used for noise reduction, sharpening, or color correction, which can inadvertently introduce artifacts that distort the color information. It can also occur due to hardware limitations or malfunctions in display devices or capture equipment, though this is less commonly the primary meaning of the term in a software or processing context.
