A színezékpróba, often translated as dye test or staining test, is a diagnostic procedure used in various fields, particularly in medicine and engineering, to detect leaks or evaluate surface integrity. The fundamental principle involves applying a colored dye to a surface or within a system and then observing for the presence of the dye in an unexpected location.

In a medical context, színezékpróba might be used to assess the patency of the fallopian tubes during fertility investigations. A colored dye is injected into the uterus, and if it successfully travels through the tubes and into the abdominal cavity, it suggests the tubes are open. In ophthalmology, a fluorescein dye test can be employed to detect corneal abrasions or ulcers. When applied to the eye, the dye adheres to damaged areas, making them visible under a special light.

In engineering, particularly in leak detection for pipelines, tanks, or sealed enclosures, a colored dye is introduced into the system. External inspection then reveals any leaks as the colored fluid escapes. Similarly, in materials science, dye penetrant inspection is a non-destructive testing method used to find surface-breaking defects in components. A liquid dye is applied, allowed to penetrate any cracks, and then removed, with a developer used to draw the trapped dye out, revealing the flaw.
