Szabályozótechnika, often translated as control engineering or control theory, is a multidisciplinary field that deals with the behavior of dynamical systems with inputs, and how their behavior is modified by feedback. The goal of regulation is to ensure that a system's output tracks a desired setpoint or trajectory, despite disturbances and uncertainties. This is achieved through the design and implementation of control systems.

A typical control system consists of a plant (the system to be controlled), sensors (to measure the system's output), actuators (to affect the system's input), and a controller. The controller receives information from the sensors, compares it to the desired setpoint, and computes an appropriate control signal to send to the actuators. This closed-loop process allows for continuous adjustment and stabilization of the system.

Key concepts in control engineering include stability, performance, and robustness. Stability ensures that the system does not exhibit unbounded behavior. Performance relates to how well the system meets its objectives, such as speed of response and accuracy. Robustness refers to the system's ability to maintain satisfactory performance even when faced with variations in the plant dynamics or external disturbances.

Common types of controllers include proportional (P), proportional-integral (PI), and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. PID controllers are widely used due to their effectiveness and relatively simple implementation. More advanced techniques, such as state-space control, adaptive control, and model predictive control, are employed for more complex systems and demanding applications.

Applications of control engineering are pervasive, found in everyday devices like thermostats and cruise control systems, as well as in complex industrial processes, robotics, aerospace, and biomedical engineering. The field continues to evolve with advancements in computational power, sensor technology, and mathematical modeling.
