Syöksyjarruja refers to a type of braking system used primarily in aircraft, particularly during landings and sometimes for emergency deceleration. The term, of Finnish origin, translates roughly to "descent brake" or "dive brake." In essence, syöksyjarruja are designed to increase drag and slow down the aircraft rapidly, especially when conventional braking might be insufficient or when a steep descent is necessary.

These braking systems typically deploy large surfaces, often flaps or spoilers located on the wings or fuselage, that extend into the airflow. By increasing the aircraft's surface area and disrupting smooth airflow, syöksyjarruja create significant aerodynamic resistance. This resistance helps to bleed off airspeed and kinetic energy.
