Individuals experiencing sytyttämishimo deliberately and repeatedly set fires on more than one occasion. This behavior is not motivated by financial gain, expression of anger, political ideology, or other discernible reasons. Instead, the act of setting fires is associated with intense excitement, gratification, or release of tension prior to the act.

The diagnosis of sytyttämishimo is made when a person experiences recurrent, deliberate, and purposeful setting of fires. Prior to setting the fire, the individual experiences significant arousal or urges. During or immediately after setting the fire, they experience pleasure, gratification, or relief. Furthermore, the firesetting is not committed to achieve some other objective, such as to conceal a crime or express rage. It is also important to rule out other mental disorders that might explain the firesetting behavior.

The exact causes of sytyttämishimo are not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Some research suggests a link to impulse control disorders and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Trauma, abuse, or neglect in childhood have also been identified as potential contributing factors.

Treatment for sytyttämishimo typically involves psychotherapy, often cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT aims to help individuals identify and change the thoughts and behaviors that lead to firesetting. Medications may also be used to manage co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression.
