Systemprosesser, or system processes, are operating-system-owned programs that run in the background to support the core functionality of a computer. They are normally started automatically by the operating system during boot or when needed by the system, and they typically run without direct user interaction. They are distinguished from brukerprosesser (user processes), which are started by users or applications to perform tasks and may require user input.

In most modern systems, systemprosesser operate with higher privileges and access to lower-level resources. They handle a range of duties, including device drivers, system monitoring, logging, background maintenance, and service orchestration. Examples of systemprosessers include the daemons or services managed by the system's service manager, such as Linux systemd or init, Windows services, and macOS launchd. The exact mechanism for starting and supervising these processes varies by platform, but the goal is to ensure that essential services remain available and that the system can recover from failures.
