Symphysitis is an inflammation of the symphysis pubis, the joint that connects the two pubic bones in the pelvis. It is a common condition that can affect both men and women, although it is more prevalent in women. The exact cause of symphysitis is not fully understood, but it is often associated with repetitive stress, trauma, or underlying conditions such as osteoporosis or arthritis.

Symptoms of symphysitis typically include pain and tenderness in the lower abdomen, particularly in the pubic area. The pain may be dull, aching, or sharp and may worsen with physical activity or prolonged standing. In some cases, the pain may radiate to the groin or lower back. Other symptoms may include a feeling of fullness or pressure in the lower abdomen, difficulty urinating, and a sense of instability in the pelvis.

Symphysitis can be diagnosed through a physical examination, which may reveal tenderness in the pubic area. Imaging studies such as X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions. Treatment options for symphysitis depend on the severity of the symptoms and the underlying cause. Mild cases may respond to rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) therapy, as well as over-the-counter pain relievers. More severe cases may require physical therapy, corticosteroid injections, or in some cases, surgery.

Prevention of symphysitis involves maintaining good posture, avoiding prolonged standing or sitting, and engaging in regular exercise to strengthen the pelvic muscles. Maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding activities that put excessive stress on the pelvis can also help prevent symphysitis. In some cases, wearing supportive shoes or using a pelvic support belt may be recommended to reduce stress on the symphysis pubis.
