A syklonseparator, commonly referred to as a cyclone separator, is a device used to remove particulate matter from a flowing gas or air stream. It operates on inertial separation principles, using a swirling motion inside a conical chamber to impart centrifugal forces that drive particles toward the outer wall, where they settle into a hopper or collection bin. The cleaned gas exits through a central outlet near the top.

Operation and design: Gas enters tangentially into the cyclone’s cylindrical section, creating a vortex. The swirling flow causes heavier particles to move outward and downward into the conical section, where they fall into the dust collection hopper. Clean gas exits through a top or central outlet, typically aided by a vortex finder. Cyclones are compact and have no moving parts, making them robust for harsh industrial environments. Variants include multi-cyclones, square or round bodies, and designs with different inlet shapes or staged separation. Materials range from carbon steel and stainless steel to ceramic linings, chosen for abrasive wear, corrosion resistance, and temperature in the application.

Performance and limitations: Cyclone efficiency depends on particle size, density, air velocity, and the geometry of the device. They are most effective for relatively large and dense particles and offer a simple, low-maintenance pre-cleaning step. The pressure drop increases with flow rate and cyclone size, and fine particulates can be challenging to capture, often necessitating downstream filtration equipment.

Applications: Cyclone separators are widely used in cement plants, metalworking and woodworking shops, mineral processing, and chemical and pharmaceutical industries. They serve as pre-separators to reduce dust loading on downstream collectors and to improve overall air-cleaning efficiency.
