Syklonierottimet are devices used to remove particulate matter from gas streams by utilizing centrifugal forces generated by a tangential inlet. The gas enters the cyclone body in a swirling motion, creating a low-pressure core and a high-velocity outer layer. Heavier particles lose momentum and strike the cyclone wall, sliding down into a hopper for collection, while the cleaned gas exits via an outlet at the top or side. Because they have no moving parts, syklonierottimet operate with relatively low maintenance and are robust in industrial environments.

They come in various designs, including single-stage cyclones and multicyclone arrays that group many small cyclones in a common housing to increase collection area. Performance depends on particle size, density, flow rate, and geometry. Cyclones are most effective for relatively larger particles and serve well as pre-cleaners before more efficient filtration stages; for very fine or sticky dust, supplementary equipment such as baghouses or scrubbers may be used.

Common materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, or ceramic-lined components to resist abrasion and corrosion. Design considerations cover inlet velocity, system pressure drop, hopper size, and accessibility for cleaning. Operators monitor performance by checking pressure drop, collected mass, and discharge conditions.
