A precleaner is a device or system designed to remove large contaminants from a process stream before it reaches the primary cleaning or processing stage. They are commonly employed to improve efficiency in air intake and filtration, as well as in industrial processes dealing with solid-laden streams. By capturing coarse debris early, precleaners reduce the load on downstream equipment and can help extend service intervals and overall system life.

In engine and equipment air intake applications, precleaners are mounted upstream of the main air filter. They use mechanisms such as cyclone separation, inertial impaction, or airflow shaping to separate out larger particles from the incoming air. Typical designs include cyclone-type units, vane-type precleaners, and rotating drum or screen-based devices. These systems aim to remove debris before it reaches the finer filtration media, improving performance and reducing maintenance.

Other uses include industrial air handling, pneumatic conveying, and gas streams where coarse solids are removed before filtration or chemical processing. Precleaners are selected based on particle size distribution, flow rate, temperature, and pressure requirements, and must be sized to balance effective removal with acceptable pressure drop and minimal flow restriction.

Advantages of precleaners include longer life for primary filters, lower energy use due to reduced filtration load, and less frequent maintenance. Limitations include added equipment cost, potential for reduced airflow if undersized or fouled, and the need for periodic cleaning and inspection of the precleaning elements.
