Sydänkohtaus, also known as a myocardial infarction or heart attack, occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is severely reduced or blocked. This typically happens due to a buildup of plaque in the coronary arteries, which can rupture and form a blood clot. The clot then obstructs blood flow, depriving the heart muscle of oxygen.

Common symptoms of a heart attack include chest pain or discomfort, which may feel like pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. This pain can radiate to the arm (often the left), jaw, neck, back, or stomach. Other symptoms can include shortness of breath, cold sweats, nausea, vomiting, and lightheadedness. Women may experience symptoms differently than men, sometimes reporting less typical chest pain and more fatigue, nausea, or shortness of breath.

Risk factors for heart attack include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, and a family history of heart disease. Stress and excessive alcohol consumption can also contribute.

Immediate medical attention is crucial if a heart attack is suspected. Prompt treatment can minimize damage to the heart muscle and improve the chances of recovery. Treatment often involves medications to dissolve blood clots or open blocked arteries, angioplasty with stenting to open the artery, or bypass surgery. Lifestyle changes, such as diet modification, regular exercise, and smoking cessation, are vital for long-term recovery and preventing future events.
