Switchmen are workers responsible for operating railway switches, also known as points. Their primary duty is to change the direction of trains by manipulating the tracks. This ensures that trains are routed onto the correct lines, whether for continuing their journey, entering a siding, or moving to a different track within a yard.

Historically, switchmen performed this task manually. They would walk along the tracks and physically move heavy levers to adjust the switch points. This was a physically demanding and often dangerous job, especially in adverse weather conditions. With the advent of modern railway technology, many switch operations are now automated or controlled remotely from a signal box or control center. However, manual switch operation is still common in certain areas, particularly on smaller lines, heritage railways, or in situations where automation is not feasible.

The role of a switchman requires a keen understanding of railway operations, signaling systems, and track layouts. They must be attentive to detail and possess good judgment to avoid errors that could lead to derailments or accidents. Safety is paramount, and switchmen must adhere to strict protocols. In modern railway systems, the term "switchman" may be less common, with the responsibilities often integrated into broader roles like train crew, yard operators, or signal technicians. Nevertheless, the fundamental task of directing trains through track switches remains a critical component of railway safety and efficiency.
