Swineherding is the practice of tending to domestic pigs, also known as swine. This involves guiding, managing, and protecting a herd of pigs. Historically, swineherding was a common agricultural practice, particularly in regions where pigs were raised for meat, lard, and other products. Swineherds, the individuals who performed this task, would often lead their pigs to foraging grounds, such as forests or meadows, where the animals could root for food like acorns, roots, and fallen fruit.

The role of a swineherd required a degree of skill and knowledge about pig behavior. They needed to understand how to keep the herd together, prevent them from straying too far, and protect them from predators. In some cultures, swineherding was a low-status occupation, while in others, it held a more respected position. The pigs themselves provided valuable resources to communities, and their management was an integral part of traditional farming systems.

As agricultural practices modernized, with the advent of confinement farming and commercial piggeries, traditional swineherding declined significantly in many parts of the world.
