Suzerain is a term used in historical and political contexts to describe a relationship in which one state or ruler (the suzerain) exercises authoritative influence over another (the vassal). In such arrangements, the vassal typically retains internal autonomy while pledging allegiance to the suzerain and acknowledging the suzerain’s precedence in external affairs, defense, or foreign policy. The level of control varied by case and period.

Historically, suzerainty was common in medieval and early modern governance. A suzerain might authorize a vassal’s internal administration while reserving rights over diplomacy, troops, and international recognition. Vassals could govern locally, collect taxes, and enforce laws, but would submit to the suzerain in matters of foreign relations and major decisions. The concept overlaps with later ideas of empire and indirect rule, and it was employed across various empires and regions with differing degrees of overlordship.

Today, the term is mainly of historical interest and scholarly use. It is often used descriptively to contrast potential sovereignty with external influence, and can be used metaphorically to describe dominant political or economic powers over less powerful states.

In this role-playing game, players assume the presidency of a fictional nation and guide policy, diplomacy, and crisis management.
