Superliima is the Finnish term for cyanoacrylate adhesive products, commonly known as super glue. These fast-acting glues are typically based on methyl- or ethyl-cyanoacrylate, with specialized formulations using longer-chain cyanoacrylates (such as 2-octyl) for medical applications. They cure rapidly when exposed to trace moisture on surfaces, undergoing anionic polymerization to form a hard, transparent bond.

Principles: On contact with moisture, the cyanoacrylate monomers polymerize and bond the surfaces. The cure is exothermic and produces a strong bond in seconds to minutes, depending on viscosity, surface roughness, and gap size. They adhere well to metal, glass, ceramic, wood, and many plastics, though bonding to polyolefins often requires primers or surface treatment.

Applications: Household repairs, crafts, electronics, automotive work, and in medical settings where tissue-compatible adhesives are used for wound closure or sutureless repair (medical-grade formulations).

Limitations: The glue is brittle and can fail under shear or impact; it can damage porous or fibrous materials; cured film is difficult to remove from skin or unintended surfaces without solvents; fumes can irritate eyes, nose, and lungs.

Handling and safety: Use in well-ventilated areas, avoid skin and eye contact, wear gloves, and work on a clean, dry surface. Acetone can remove uncured adhesive from skin; cured bonds require mechanical separation.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place with the cap tightly closed to minimize moisture exposure; shelf life varies but is commonly 12–24 months. Disposal should follow local regulations; cured glue is inert but should not be flushed.
