Cure occurs at room temperature within seconds as the liquid polymerizes to a tough, acrylate polymer. The reaction is exothermic and the resulting polymer adheres to most substrates when surfaces are clean and dry.

In medical contexts, ethyl cyanoacrylate is generally avoided for tissue bonding due to tissue toxicity; longer-chain cyanoacrylates such as 2-octyl cyanoacrylate are preferred for wound closure. Safety and handling: The adhesive bonds skin and eyes quickly and can generate heat during curing. Fumes can irritate the respiratory tract. It should be used in a well-ventilated area, avoided on living tissue, and kept away from heat, moisture, and incompatible materials.
