Subte is the rapid transit system serving Buenos Aires, Argentina. The term is a shortened form of subterraneo, reflecting its function as an urban underground railway, and the network is commonly referred to simply as the subte.

History and scope: The Subte opened in 1913 with Line A, making it the oldest underground railway in the Southern Hemisphere and the Spanish-speaking world. Over the decades, the network expanded with additional lines, later designated B, C, D, E and H, to connect central districts with outer neighborhoods and surrounding areas. Today the Subte remains a central element of the city’s public transport system.

Operations and network: The system is operated by Metrovías under concession from the City of Buenos Aires. Infrastructure is owned by Subterráneos de Buenos Aires S.A. The network uses standard-gauge tracks and electric traction supplied by a 1500-volt DC third rail.
