subpools

A subpool is a memory allocation construct used within a hierarchical memory pool system. It represents a smaller pool derived from a larger parent pool, allowing allocations to be organized and managed in a structured way. Subpools are commonly employed to improve allocation performance, isolation, and lifetime management by grouping related allocations under a common lifecycle.

In a typical implementation, a pool consists of one or more subpools. Each subpool may have its own free lists, allocation strategies, and growth behavior, but ultimately allocates memory from the same underlying arena or allocator as the parent pool. Allocations from a subpool can often be freed within the subpool independently of other subpools, while destruction of the parent pool typically frees all contained subpools. This arrangement enables hierarchical lifetime control: subpools can outlive or be tied to specific phases of a program, while still sharing the parent’s overall management and cleanup.

Subpools are especially useful for managing lifetimes and minimizing fragmentation in long-running systems or servers. For example, a program might create a top-level pool for a request, with subpools for parsing, rendering, and cleanup tasks. Clearing or destroying a subpool can reclaim memory efficiently without affecting unrelated allocations, while destroying the parent pool releases all associated subpools at once. Some memory pool libraries also support creating, resetting, or merging subpools, as well as custom allocation policies per subpool to optimize performance for particular object sizes or lifetimes.
