Strechs, also known as stretch marks, are thin lines that appear on the skin when it stretches or shrinks rapidly. They are a common condition that affects people of all ages, genders, and skin types, though they are most frequently observed during periods of rapid growth or weight changes. Strechs typically develop as a result of the skin's elastic fibers being overstretched, leading to small tears in the dermis, the middle layer of the skin.

The exact cause of strechs is not fully understood, but they often occur during pregnancy, adolescence, rapid weight gain or loss, muscle growth, and conditions that cause rapid changes in body composition, such as Cushing’s syndrome. Genetic factors may also play a role, as some individuals are more prone to developing strechs than others. Strechs can appear on various parts of the body, including the abdomen, breasts, thighs, hips, buttocks, and upper arms.

Strechs usually appear as purple, red, pink, or silver-white lines, depending on their age. New strechs are often red or purple due to blood vessels beneath the skin, while older strechs may fade to a silvery-white or pinkish color as the skin heals. They are generally harmless and do not cause pain or other symptoms, though some people may experience mild itching or discomfort.

While there is no guaranteed way to prevent strechs, maintaining a healthy weight, staying hydrated, and using moisturizers may help reduce their likelihood. Topical treatments such as creams containing ingredients like retinol, hyaluronic acid, or silicone may improve their appearance over time, though they do not eliminate strechs completely. Laser therapy and microneedling are among the cosmetic procedures sometimes used to reduce the visibility of strechs. Since strechs are a normal part of skin remodeling, they do not require medical treatment unless they are associated with an underlying condition.
