Stopniowanie, also known as graduation or tempering, is a metallurgical process used to improve the toughness and ductility of hardened steel. It is typically performed after the steel has undergone hardening through quenching. Quenching rapidly cools the steel, making it very hard but also brittle. Stopniowanie involves reheating the hardened steel to a specific temperature below its critical point, holding it there for a period, and then cooling it. The precise temperature and holding time are critical and depend on the type of steel and the desired properties.

During the process, the steel's microstructure undergoes changes. Some of the excess carbon atoms that formed martensite during quenching are allowed to precipitate out as fine carbides, and the highly strained martensite structure relaxes. This reduction in internal stresses and the formation of tempered martensite lead to increased toughness and ductility. The higher the temperature used in the stopniowanie process, the softer and more ductile the steel becomes, but also less hard. Conversely, lower temperatures result in a harder but less ductile material.

The choice of temperature for stopniowanie is therefore a compromise between hardness and toughness. For example, tools that require high hardness and wear resistance might be tempered at lower temperatures, while structural components that need to withstand impact might be tempered at higher temperatures. This controlled heat treatment allows manufacturers to tailor the mechanical properties of steel to specific applications, making it a fundamental process in the production of a wide range of metal products, from tools and springs to automotive parts and structural components.
