Steroidiset, commonly referred to in English as steroids, designate a large and chemically related family of lipophilic organic compounds that share a four-ring core structure known as cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene. The term covers both natural hormones produced in the body, such as glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and sex steroids, and a broad range of synthetic derivatives developed for medicine, research, and, in some cases, athletic performance enhancement.
