Stent-related refers to issues, outcomes, and clinical considerations associated with implanted stents, devices designed to keep bodily lumens open. Stents are used in various systems, most commonly the coronary arteries, but also peripheral arteries, biliary and ureteral ducts, the tracheobronchial tree, and other pathways. They may be metal or polymer, bare-metal or drug-eluting, and can be intended as permanent implants or temporary scaffolds depending on indication and device type.

Common stent-related problems include restenosis, where the treated vessel narrows again due to tissue growth; stent thrombosis, a clot forming within or near the stent; and mechanical issues such as malapposition, underexpansion, fracture, or migration. In nonvascular stents, obstruction can recur from sludge, encrustation, or tumor ingrowth; infection and migration are additional risks. Airway stents can provoke granulation tissue and mucus plugging.

Prevention and management involve careful device selection and deployment technique, appropriate antiplatelet therapy when indicated (for example, dual antiplatelet therapy after coronary stents), and patient-specific risk assessment. Follow-up imaging—such as angiography, intravascular ultrasound, or CT—helps assess patency and detect complications. When issues arise, treatment may include repeat intervention, medical therapy, or, in some cases, stent removal or replacement.

Ongoing research aims to improve biocompatibility, reduce restenosis and thrombosis, and tailor stent design to individual patient anatomy. Guidelines emphasize balancing ischemic and bleeding risks, ensuring device sizing and duration of therapy are appropriate, and addressing noncardiac stent complications through multidisciplinary care.
