Stempeling is the process of applying a stamp to a surface to create an impression, mark, or decorative motif. Derived from the Dutch word stempel (stamp), stempeling covers a range of methods used in printing, crafts, and manufacturing. In everyday use it often refers to hand-stamping with ink, but broader forms include embossing (debossing) and hot foil stamping, where a heated die transfers metallic foil to a surface.

Techniques commonly included in stempeling are ink stamping, embossing, debossing, and hot foil stamping. Ink stamping uses a raised image mounted on a handle (often rubber or polymer); the stamp is inked and pressed onto paper or other substrates. Embossing and debossing use a male and female die under pressure to produce a raised or recessed impression. Hot foil stamping relies on heat and pressure to transfer a metallic foil from a carrier sheet to the substrate. In manufacturing contexts, stamping can also refer to applying logos, serial numbers, or other marks to metal, plastic, or leather goods.

Materials typically involved in stempeling include paper, cardboard, leather, fabric, metal, glass, and various plastics. The choice of technique and substrate determines the final appearance, durability, and tactile feel of the mark or decoration. Tools range from hand stamps and self-inking stamps to stamping presses, embossing folders, and foil applicators.

Historically, stamping practices have roots in sealing and labeling with signets, while modern rubber stamps emerged in the 19th century for widespread craft use. Industrial forms, including hot foil stamping, developed in the 20th century to provide decorative and security-related marks on diverse products.
